READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK 2013

Dear CES Families,

Forest Witcraft said it well, “One hundred years from now, it won’t matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank, nor what my clothes looked like, BUT the world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child.” Sometimes as parents, we wonder if we do too much for our children at times; other times, too little. Yet you may not have realized how key you are to laying the first bricks in your child’s reading foundation. We invite you to be a part of our treasured “Read Across America” week at CES, celebrated annually close to Theodore Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss)’s birthday. Activities are planned throughout the week, but these are some special ones that will give you and your children lifelong memories.

1. All week---dress in celebration of each “book of the day.” How wild can you get?

2. Plan a Seuss character/book costume together and put it on for show-and-tell during our Friday “Dr. Seuss Parade”! Come camera and camcorder ready to capture all sorts of “things you can THINK!”

3. Go “Food Network—Millbrook-style” and create a Seuss snack for your child to bring and share with his/her class on Friday afternoon. Recipes appreciated…spread the creativity!

As the school year ramps up to late April, be ready to celebrate reading and turning in your child’s 100 Book sheet! We hear names daily on the intercom from kids K-2 who have met this family goal, and it is so exciting! Finally, be ready to continue the fun in the summer with the Millbrook Public Library’s summer reading program, which has incentives beyond measure to keep setting and attaining the goal of reading for pleasure for a lifetime. As “good readers become great leaders,” our time in shaping them to do so could not be more wisely spent.
